Kala Namak rice was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2013, which officially recognizes its special origin and qualities.
🌿Where It’s Grown:
This rice is mainly cultivated in the 7th agricultural zone of Uttar Pradesh, covering three major divisions:
🌿Gorakhpur Division: Deoria, Gorakhpur, Mahrajganj, and Siddharth Nagar.
🌿Basti Division: Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Siddharth Nagar.
🌿Devipatan Division: Bahraich, Balrampur, Gonda, and Shravasti.
🌿Place of Origin:
Siddharthnagar is considered the original home of Kala Namak rice. Over time, farming expanded to nearby districts in the region.
🌿Cultural Significance:
Often called “Buddha Rice”, this ancient grain is linked to Lord Buddha and the Kapilvastu kingdom, where it was grown centuries ago.
🌿Health Benefits:
Kala Namak rice is naturally rich in protein (almost twice as much as regular rice) and has a low glycemic index, making it ideal for people with diabetes or those seeking a healthier diet.
